Miramar beach comprises a massive spread of sand west of Panjim, where the Mandovi River joins the sea. This is the city’s recreational area and the place is crowded every evening and especially on Sunday. From here, the beach continues southward for over 2 km before it ends at the base of the Cabo Raj Bhavan hillock.
The Gaspar Dias Circle on the main road was once the site of a small fortress of the same name, whish along with the Reis Magos fort on the other bank, guarded the entrance too the Mandovi River. The fort was demolished after Goa’s capital was moved to Panjim and all that survives is the cannon found while the foundations of the nearby college were dug up.
Just off the circle, on the sand is the samadhi of Dayanand Bandodkar, Goa’s first Chief Minister whose mortal remains were cremated at the spot. From the beach there is a great view of the Raj Bhavan whish is illuminated at night
